Former Vasco da Gama captain Juninho has revealed that he turned down a better offer from Atlético Mineiro to join the New York Red Bulls this week.

Juninho, 37, revealed that the most lucrative offer had been from the Belo Horizonte club, but the former Lyon star in the end choose to start a new chapter of his career in the US.

“The proposal of the Red Bulls is far from being the most favorable,” Juninho told Lancenet!

“The best would be Atlético. What they offered me was really tempting, besides the possibility of achievements, with a great team. Cuca, Kalil and myself talked but for all that I have with Vasco, it would be difficult to leave for another club in Brazil.

“I was grateful for their trust. Kalil said even that would not have any problem, but I said that if I did not stay in Vasco, I was going to the U.S.”

The midfielder also revealed that the main reason for leaving the Rio giants was that the current financial situation at Vasco is ruining the club.

“If the club was organised, my contract would have been renewed for a long time. Would not have to listen to other proposals.

“But I do not want to risk staining everything I’ve done for Vasco. There is much wrong. The environment in everyday life is hard, it’s dirty, and I can not be a shield for it all. I have only to play football, this is how I might help.”
