Fluminense captain Fred moved to 98 goals in 145 games for the Brasileirão leaders with his winning strike in the 1-0 victory over Botafogo at the weekend and hitting a century would move him to 15th in the all-time goalscores list.
The former Lyon striker, 28, was delighted at getting close to the landmark. He told Lancenet:
“It’s a significant number and that makes me very happy. It’s proof that my work and that of the team has been done very well. Coming close to 100 goals for a big club where I’m winning titles is something that makes me very happy.
“I hope to continue on this path, seeking the best for Fluminense, and reaching those landmarks is a consequence of what I do day-in-day in training and also in games. I just hope that we continue to stand strong until the end of the season.”
Fluminense are in action again on Wednesday evening when they travel to Bahia.
